Abstract:

Hearing impaired people are often neglectedmusical education. This happens because mu-sical activities are often focused on the devel-opment of the sense of hearing. In this workwe propose the use of visual and haptic cuesfor musical education. These cues are generatedfrom the real-time mapping of audio features ex-tracted from a microphone stream. These map-pings were incorporated into a mobile app andused in music lessons offered to a hearing im-paired community. As a result of these lessons, participants developed the abilities of perceivingand producing rhythms, playing virtual instru-ments and participating in a collective musicalpractice.
