Abstract:

Emotional experiences, including anxiety, are composed of physiological and behavioral components (Valentine, 2002). In manageable amounts, anxiety can prompt individuals to respond positively to a stimulus; however, this effect persists only up to the point at which the organism reaches its maximum level of tolerance. Once this threshold is exceeded, the capacity for regulation and adaptation may decline, which, in a musical performance context, can be detrimental.

Based on a review of concepts of Music Performance Anxiety developed by scholars in the field (Valentine, 2002; Kenny, 2011; Papageorgi, 2007), we highlight the need for a specific approach to management strategies, as well as clearer guidance regarding their appropriate use from a Sport Psychology perspective.
